For those who have watched the blockbuster film this 2018—‘Avengers: Infinity War’ which left most of its audience a jaw-dropping moment in the end; but to some of the viewers like the Filipinos—were all rejoicing when they confirmed that the main villain sought solace in the ‘eighth wonder of the world’–boondocks of Banaue Rice Terraces (Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe).
It can be remembered the conversation between Thanos (Josh Brolin) and Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the latter asked what’s next after the former gather all six stones, snap his fingers, make all things cease to exist, and call it mercy; he replied, “I finally rest and watch the sunrise on a grateful universe.”
Despite the feeling that the film had given its fans; the Filipino moviegoers took pride in the fact that the Philippines was the choice of Thanos’s backdrop for his retirement.
From a post on Indochina Productions, a media company based in Bangkok, Thailand, which shared a link from a site—thelocationguide.com, it wrote: “Marvel’s gigantic cinematic crossover, Avengers: Infinity War, utilised Georgia, New York and Scotland for on location filming. The production also incurred major shoots at Pinewood Studios Atlanta and utilised several plate shots from Brazil, Iceland and the Philippines.”
It thus confirmed that scene where Thanos was watching the sunrise—was indeed taken from Ifugao, Philippines. Perhaps, the closest reason that can be speculated to which the backdrop was chosen—it’s because of the Igorot folklore. In Mt. Amuyao, it is believed to be that in this high mountain where the surviving man and woman, Bugan and Wigan, took refuge. To some, the said legend is compared to the Biblical tale of Noah, whose ark landed in Mt. Ararat.
Also, another reason why Filipinos are celebrating about the said Marvel flick is the inclusion of a Filipino-American actor to whom Thanos character have beaten in the battle that engaged almost all the Marvel superheroes.
One of the actors in the film Drax of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is portrayed by an American actor, former professional wrestler, mixed martial artist and bodybuilder–David Michael Bautista Jr. He was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Donna Raye and David Michael Bautista, a still-active hairdresser in the DC area. His mother has Greek ancestry, and his father is the son of Filipino immigrants.
