The 26th Season of UP Playwright’s Theater is about to close with its upcoming production—‘The Kundiman Party’, a play with music by Floy Quintos and directed by Dexter Santos with Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino and Kalil Almonte as the lead stars and is set to open on Wednesday, April 11 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd Floor Palma Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

Centenera-Buencamino and Almonte portray the retired singer Maestra Adela Dolores and the young tech-savvy activist Bobby, respectively. The story is set in the tumultuous present and revolves around Adela and the activist named Bobby. She has this belief of the transformative power of the Kundiman as an art song and when she met Bobby, her long-dormant sense of Nationalism is awakened. Together they embark on a crusade that surprisingly becomes a viral sensation and their eccentric form of protest and its dangerous consequences are the stuff of bittersweet comedy about the times humans live in and the choices they all must make in the process.

The production is a timely reminder to Sing, Remember and Resist.

They are joined by some of the finest stage actors who have graced the Dulaang UP stage and they are Frances Makil-Ignacio, Stella Cañete-Mendoza, Missy Maramara, Jenny Jamora, Arya Herrera, Teetin Villanueva, and Teroy Guzman is playing a pivotal role as Bobby’s estranged father—Senator Juancho Valderama.

The formidable team of theatre artists—Monino Duque (lighting design), Krina Cayabyab (musical direction), and Mitoy Sta. Ana (production design) are also part of this fifth collaborative production of Quintos and Santos (previous works include ‘Angry Christ’, ‘Ang Huling Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini’, ‘Ang Nawalang Kapatid’, and ‘Collection’).

The play is set till the 29th of this month. The play is staged on Wednesdays to Fridays at 7PM; Saturdays at 3PM and 7PM; and Sundays at 10AM and 3PM.
