It is about time that Metro Manila moviegoers get to appreciate a film made by artists from the South, particularly the Cebuanos titled ‘Magbuwag ‘Ta Kay’ (Let’s Break-up ‘Coz); produced by Heritage Productions headed by husband-and-wife tandem of Charles and Sunshine Lim. The film is set in Cebu and in the Cebuano language; it features local Cebuano talents of national renown, former Star Power contestant Akiko Solon and social media celebrity Rowell ‘Medyo Maldito’ Ucat.
The film explores romance and relationships in today’s millennial Filipino society and tackles the effects of long-term relationship setups as well.
Shot in April 2017 for just 10 days at various locations in Cebu’s beauty and tourist spots in Mactan, Moalboal, and Dumanjug.
‘Magbuwag ‘Ta Kay’ could also be referred to a ‘proposal’ made by Roy to Kay as they breathed into the characters of Rowell and Akiko. Both are young couple who are about to plan a fun and romantic outing to Camarines Sur for its waterfalls and wakeboarding when Kay drops the bombshell of the news that her parents have finally arranged her entry to Canada, where most of her folks have already migrated.
In the process, Roy is convinced that her girlfriend’s departure would mean one possible scenario form them—the end of their relationship; and he refuses to explore of having a long-distance relationship with her. He reasons to sweetheart that it would be better they should choose to break up like adults without the drama.
In a month’s time, Kay is set to fly; thus they agree to spend many waking moments together as possible and have the breakup at the airport.
