Luna, Del Mundo: Big Winners at Five Continents Film Fest

Anna Luna, one of the actresses in Lemuel Lorca’s ‘Maestra’ (‘An Educator’, 2017) and the film’s screenwriter Archie Del Mundo won her first Best Actress award and a Special Mention citation for Best Screenplay at the Five Continents International Film Festival in Venezuela this October.

Luna plays Iah Seraspi daughter of a poor fisherman from Romblon who topped the board exams for teachers. She bested nine to 12 foreign and local actresses, including a celebrated Argentine actress. This is her second time to do a film in Pinatubo. Also, Luna as an independent film artist and a theater actress, she is nominated at BroadwayWorld Philippines Awards 2017 as Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in ‘Changing Partners’ (vote for her via this link); which will also have a film version and set to compete in Cinema One Originals 2017 this November.

Both Luna and Del Mundo will be receiving gold trophies and certificates from the festival organizers.

‘Maestra’ is a film based on interconnected true stories of three generation of teachers. Luna is joined by Gawad Urian Best Actress awardee Angeli Bayani (‘Melancholia’, ‘Norte, the end of History’)  portrays the role of Panguelo by religiously learning the Mag-AnchiAyta language and veteran actress and Queen of Visayan Movies Gloria Sevilla as she essays the character of Ma’am Espie, as a tireless teacher cum impromptu poetess.

The film premiered in Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in August this year, and is produced by Dr. Carl Balita whose other film is Adolf Alix’s ‘Nars’.

Dr. Balita stressed that the film is an attempt to help the audience debunk the idea of teaching as a ‘last resort’ as a profession and appreciate its worth. It also envisioned to make the new generation see what teachers are really made of.

Also, ‘Maestra’ has also been selected in other international festivals, such as Warsaw Avenue Film Festival and FACINE festival in the United States, and at the Sydney World Film Festival.

It has a special screening set on December 6 at 2 and 5pm, UP Film Center.
